I am a visual artist, living and working in Park City, Utah. I make collages of the plants, animals, and landscapes around my home. I am fascinated by the evolutionary strategies of living things in their environments, the ways a creature’s surface pattern can either dissolve its form into the background or project it forward.
For me, collage is the ideal medium for this exploration. Paper is, by nature, a flat surface on which there can be limitless variation of color, pattern, and texture. Finding form in all that visual signal is an opportunity to explore the line between blending in and standing out, appearing and disappearing. I like the challenge of building things that are not quite what they seem. At first, you might think you're looking at a painting but, when you look closer, you realize it is something else. This creative boundary mirrors nature itself: a constant push and pull of surface obscuring and revealing form.
